Smoking Facts

  1. Smoking is estimated to be the cause of approximately 5700 deaths in Ireland each year.
  2. Around 30% of all cancer deaths in Ireland are attributed to smoking.
  3. A single cigarette contains over 4000 chemicals, including 200 known poisons & more than 60 carcinogens.
  4. Smokers are twice as likely to die from heart attacks as are no–smokers.
  5. Every year, about 3000 non-smoking adults die of lung cancer as a result of breathing in second hand smoke.

Quitting Tips

  1. Calculate how much you have been spending on a weekly/monthly basis.
  2. Think of yourself as a non-smoker and not as deprived ex–smoker.
  3. Take up some light exercise.
  4. Make a list of the reasons why you want to quit smoking & leave it somewhere you can see it.
  5. Don't fall for the temptation of having "just one". Even a single cigarette will reignite your cravings for more.
